Week 01 Day 03, 13th June '11 (Mon)

Before going any further, all these video blogging may lessen as I start working on my actual effect shots and I'll have less them to edit them proper or add texts so do forgive me. I'll do my best in throwing in as much videos as possible!

This is my first time performing such documentation as i felt it's an important milestone for myself & the others. At the end of the attachment, I will plan time and put extra effort in editing them together!

Entering SESI

Got down to 3rd Street Promenade and coincidentally Mr Michael arrived at the same time. First person we met was Miss Aliza whom a few of the student met during the video conference in NYP, followed by Miss Traci, I believe one of her responsibility is arranging classroom training.

We were later introduced to two of the new interns, Zac and Charles. They actually drove their way to Los Angeles from Savannah, if I recalled correctly! As we were being briefed on the dos & don'ts, Ziggy returned to the office and join the conversation. Most of the exchanges happened between Mr Michael, Ziggy & Aliza, rest of us were merely listening! Hahaha.

3 of the current interns, Corrine, Eric and John came in and gave us a look at the VFX shots they had been working on the past months and they were all really impressive!

Corrine's shot was having a stalk of green grapes popping like water balloons which looks great with sub-surface scattering! She gave us a peek at the progression, the results from good to becoming seriously good. Another project, where she used pyro to burn off a piece of paper and using simulation to drive the shader of the paper.

Eric's had a stinyray swimming through an under-ocean environment, it had particles advected based on the movement of the stingray and fake caustics! I do remember seeing the stingray model from an animation tutorial on sidefx.com, it was neat.

John had a different approach, he showed us a FLIP fluids lesson he made. A terrain with a river bank and flip fluid flowing down it, but they would eventually go out of control and flow over the bank towards undesired parts of the scene. People will be able to use a curve and velocity field created by particles to control FLIP fluids' movement. Do recall Jeff Wagner demonstrating this during Houdini 11 launch event on youtube, it was still amazing to see somebody do it live!

I don't have a video of Jon but here's the next best thing,

Apology in advance for any inaccuracy in the information or spelling error of their names. Hehe.
Will also speak to them to see whether I can get their permission to upload/link their videos here!

Subsequently, Aliza suggested that Charles and Zac (from SCAD, like Mr Chee Loong and TJ) should show some of their work as well. It was so much to take in, watching so many good work in a day... felt a little inferior, I should be working harder than this! These guys are incredible & are experts at shader languages.

Managed to find one of the work Charles showed, I've seen it before and felt a little surreal to know the creator was right in front of me... Watch it!
